Round 1, Heat 4 13/3/2014
Po Leung Kuk Tong Nai Kan Junior Secondary College
Shek Lei Catholic Secondary School

Message from Radio Chinwag:

We made a MISTAKE!! After listening back to the recording we've realised that Alec did in fact get 7 and not 6 punctuation marks in round 5, so 35 points were awarded to Shek Lei when they should have been given to Tong Nai Kan. Our apologies to both teams for the mistake and, most of all, our apologies to Alec. Sorry Alec! Fortunately our mistake doesn't change the overall winners though - congratulations to Tong Nai Kan, commiserations to Shek Lei.

A letter from Captain Satara

We had a great time getting the chance to interact with people from different schools. The challenges educated us in terms of our general knowledge on things that we rarely deal with our school. It was really a great experience we learned a lot from it. Competitions like this are really helpful for students to reach out, know more about the things around them and increase their general knowledge. It is entertainment and learning at the same time. When the competition started, we were a bit nervous, but later on that feeling was gone because of the friendly atmosphere and judges. Losing or winning is not so important as long as we learn something from it, and we did learn from it. Fortunately, we won the competition and hope to win the semi-final and final.

Hong Kong True Light College

Comments from Captain Benedict Yu on our Facebook page

I'm the captain of St Bonaventure College and High School's representative and we had the 1st round against the Hong Kong TRue Light College. We did a great experience and discovered the fun of english, esp. about the idioms. I found that that is my cworst part and we sure will train more about idioms to prepare for the semi finals. Btw, I met four new friends at HKTLC. They gave me their facebook name, still I cannot find them. I hope I can find them through this page.

A letter from Captain Joycelina

The FRCSS Quiz Team:
Hello? 1,2,3 testing. This is Captain Joycelina.” Seriously, I didn’t expect I’d ever be a captain! I thought of myself as just a girl who learned English during her English lessons. There was a big change in my outlook after I took part in the Chinwag Challenge. After taking part, now when I hear some news or an English idiom, I wonder how I can explain it in English. This is a way to improve myself. I’m highly motivated. I don’t want to just sit in the classroom and learn English from books anymore. During the competition I came across words I’d never heard and idioms that didn’t know even existed. The Chinwag Challenge showed me just how much more I need to learn. Losing marks taught me not to be reckless. Our unexpected victory taught me never to give up. Anything is possible. During the challenge I learned more and came to understand the wisdom of some idioms. I learned I need to add value to myself and gain more English capital. It was a valuable experience and I can’t wait to participate again in the second round.

10 rounds
2 teams
4 members in each team
1 team captain

For team rounds:

Whichever team presses the bell first gets the chance to answer

Correct answer = +5 points
Wrong answer = -5 points

and passed to opposing team for a bonus:

Correct answer = +5 points
Wrong answer = no penalty

Let’s go through the ten rounds one by one.

Round 1 - General Knowledge

Team round, comprised of ten questions about general knowledge.

Round 2 - Phrasal Verbs

Team round. A phrasal verb, and an explanation of it, are given but in the phrasal verb one of the words is missing. Students have to give the missing word.

Round 3 - Spelling Bee

Individual round. Each student is given two words that they must spell correctly. They will be allowed to correct themselves once only.

Round 4 - Synonyms and Antonyms

Team round. Teams must give a synonym or antonym for the words given.

Round 5 - Idiomatic Expressions

Team round. An idiomatic expression will be given. Teams have to give an explanation, in their own words, of what the idiom means.

Round 6 - Items in a category: Head-to-Head

Team captains have to nominate one of their team members for the head-to-head. A category is given to both teams. Teams confer about how many items they can list in the category. The nominees from each team are then separated from their teams and have to bid head-to-head on how many items they can give. Whoever bids the higher number then has to give that number of items; if they succeed they get five points for each item, if they fail the number of items bid times five points goes to the opposing team. The round tests memory, vocabulary, risk-taking and strategy.

Round 7 - Mathematics

Team round. Questions are given to test students' abilities with mental arithmetic and the application of their mathematical knowledge.....but all in English!

Round 8 - Collocations

Individual round. Each student is given one phrase with a word missing. They need to choose the appropriate collocation to fill the gap.

Round 9 - Word Pairs

Team round. A description of two words is given. The words have the same spelling except one letter is different. The teams need to give the word pair.

Round 10 - Current Affairs

Team round. To test students' knowledge about how much they have been paying attention to the world around them, questions are given about current affairs in the news recently.
